Venn Chardonnay 2021

Venn Club Members only

Beautifully ripe Chardonnay that was fermented and aged in old Burgundian barrels. A crisp, refined wine that is drinking well now but will also cellar well. In very short supply.

Tasting notes

Since 2017, we have been working closely with a lovely vineyard in the Crouch Valley of Essex called Martin’s Lane. The owner, Roy, has found a fantastic plot, which is perfectly suited to growing Chardonnay. This makes up an important part of the Silex blend, but in 2021 we decided to reserve a barrel of just Chardonnay for Venn Club members.

The grapes were whole bunch pressed and then transferred directly to three-year old Burgundian barrels where they completed fermentation and malolactic fermentation. The wine then remained in barrel for 12 months. The quality of the fruit shone through from the beginning meaning we felt we just had to keep a single barrel back. Minimal movement of the wine, no fining or filtration and hand bottling directly from the barrel has respected the integrity of the fruit and preserved the beautiful aromas that we discovered in the cellar.

The wine has an intense nose of lemon-peel and ripe apple above a light toasty note. On the palate the texture and oak qualities shine through. It is soft, round and buttery whilst retaining a crisp acidity and freshness. There is a very good length and it would accompany food beautifully or even drink well, slightly indulgently, on its own. There is bottle ageing potential so it just needs a good decision as to when to choose that special occasion to open it.
